How Cannabis Tinctures are Made

In the landscape of marijuana, there are a vast number of products to try, including vapes, beverages, edibles, flowers, and the tried and true tincture. Historically, tinctures have been used to treat symptoms for over 2,000 years and with good reason–marijuana tinctures provide tons of benefits and can be used in many different ways. If you are interested in learning more about tinctures at Terrasana, this article will go into what ingredients are used to make them, as well as how they’re made.

Marijuana Tincture Benefits

A marijuana tincture is essentially made up of marijuana that has been soaked in a liquid base. Unlike smoking and vaping, tinctures offer a much different way to consume marijuana products. Not only can you use a marijuana tincture topically on the skin, but you can also ingest it. Using marijuana tinctures both ways provides a great deal of benefits, some that overlap and some that exist on their own. For example, using a cannabis product topically can help provide relaxation, calm stress, and uplift the mood, but it also helps improve the look of your skin and hair.

While many may assume that marijuana edibles and tinctures are similar, they’re actually quite different. As tinctures are not considered a food item, they can exceed the 100 mg THC cap that edibles have. Marijuana tinctures also enter the bloodstream differently than an edible does. Edibles require digestion, meaning they are processed through the stomach and the liver. Tinctures, however, are absorbed under the tongue or through the skin, providing a more immediate effect.

How is a Tincture Made

Basically, a cannabis tincture is made up of a liquid base infused with a cannabis extract. Strictly speaking, a tincture is made of an alcohol-based liquid, however, many tinctures today are also infused with other ingredients, like oils to make them easier to ingest.

The first step in making a marijuana or hemp-derived tincture is steeping cannabis in a food-grade (meaning it’s ingestible) liquid base, like alcohol, MCT coconut oil, and/or a glycerin-based liquid. Once the marijuana has soaked in the liquid for a few days, the plant materials are filtered out, leaving a hemp-infused liquid tincture behind.

That marijuana-infused liquid is then tested for quality and efficacy before it is ready to consume. Most manufacturers of marijuana tinctures use third-party testing labs to make sure their products provide the best experiences for consumers. Once tested for efficacy, the tincture is bottled and sent out for consumers to enjoy. Usually, marijuana or CBD tinctures can be found in 1 fl oz (30 ml) glass bottles with a dropper that allows a consumer to administer a consistent dose.

Ingredients in a Cannabis Tincture

Typically, the ingredients used in a marijuana tincture are chosen to provide different efficacious experiences. You can choose your marijuana tincture based on the benefits you’d like to enjoy. Many of the tinctures found at Terrasana use a combination of different cannabinoids to provide different benefits. For example, if you’d like to use your marijuana tincture for pain relief, you’d likely look for one that has been formulated with THC, CBD, and CBG that you can use topically and internally. You can also choose a different type of liquid base depending on whether you decide to ingest your tincture, use it topically, or both. With the varying amounts of cannabinoids, like CBD, CBG, CBN, and THC available in tinctures, you really can tailor your marijuana tincture to provide you with the experience you’d like.
